Overheard a paralegal talking about condo lien deadlines, now I'm second guessing

I was waiting at the Land Titles office downtown last Tuesday and two paralegals were chatting about how many owners lose their units over missed lien deadlines in Edmonton. One said they see at least 5 files a month where someone ignored the notice letter for under $3k in fees. It got me thinking, my condo board sent me a warning about a $600 special assessment and I almost tossed it aside. Has anyone here fought a condo lien on their own or is a lawyer basically required for these?

That $600 could turn into thousands real fast with legal fees and interest piled on. Condo boards got way too much power over these liens, but honestly fighting it solo is a losing game unless you got receipts proving they messed up the paperwork.

Yeah thats mostly true but @stone.jesse nailed the receipts part. The thing people miss is that condo boards have to follow the Condominium Property Act to the letter, so if their notice is even a day late or missing a required line, the lien can be thrown out. Worth a quick free consult with a real estate lawyer before you pay anything, they'll usually tell you if the paperwork smells off.
