Tried using 3M wire nuts on a knob and tube splice and the old guys were right about me being an idiot

Wait, you actually put 3M wire nuts on knob and tube? That's wild. Those old porcelain connectors are held on by friction and hope, not a plastic shell with threads. The whole point of knob and tube is that it's a completely different system, not something you mix modern accessories with. Honestly surprised that wire nut didn't just fall off when you let go. Those splices need proper twisting and tape, not a nut that's designed for solid copper in Romex. That's a recipe for a loose connection and a fire hazard right there.

3M nuts on k&t? That's asking for trouble. The old way works for a reason - twist tight, solder if you can, then tape it with good rubber tape. Those plastic nuts just don't grip the stranded wire right.
