My buddy's client said that and he found a lost wedding ring in the mess.

Honestly had the same thing happen with a lost earring back. Cleared off the whole desk into a tray, then went through it piece by piece with good light. Found it stuck to some tape.

Sounds a bit dramatic to me. A messy bench just means you're getting work done. I wouldn't lose sleep over it.
