Just hit a wall with law enforcement asking for my chat logs in Florida

I got a call from a detective last Tuesday asking for my messages from a Signal group I run for activists here in Orlando. I told them I can't hand over encrypted stuff even if I wanted to because I don't have the keys, but they kept pushing about metadata. It feels like they think encryption is hiding something criminal instead of protecting free speech. Has anyone else dealt with local cops trying to pressure you into decrypting communications?

honestly i dont get why people freak out about this stuff. they asked for logs and you said no, thats pretty much the end of it right? unless you actually did something shady i doubt theyre gonna push it further

Three years ago a guy in my county got hit with a subpoena over some forum logs he refused to hand over. It dragged on for months and cost him close to ten grand in legal fees before the judge dropped it. So yeah unless you're totally anonymous or have zero digital footprint, telling them no doesn't always just make it go away.
