Selling my knitwear online made me rethink every pricing guide I've ever read.

In my view, if you're not making a profit, you're just practicing a hobby, not running a business.

My friend who bakes cakes spent months charging barely more than the cost of butter and flour. She called it "getting her name out there" but really she was just working for free. I see it everywhere, from people fixing computers to building websites. They look at the price of parts or some online rate card and forget their own time has any value at all.

This is huge in freelance work too. Graphic designers often quote based on software costs, ignoring all the time spent on drafts. Like @jamieclark said, that's basically giving away your labor. I know photographers who charge for prints but not for the editing hours. It sets a bad example for everyone in the field. When does this cycle of undercharging actually end?
