Had a plank snap clean in half on a glue down job yesterday

It was a 7 inch wide engineered oak, about halfway through the run. I was tapping it into place with my mallet and it just gave way with a loud crack. Had to stop, pull up the whole row, and cut a new piece to fit. Anyone else run into this with wider boards lately?

Was the board unusually dry or did it have a visible flaw before you started? I've seen some wider engineered stuff come in with hidden stress cracks that don't show until you put pressure on it. What brand was it?

I was working with a 5/8 inch engineered oak from a big box store... looked fine on the surface but I swear the core was like compressed cardboard. Snapped clean in two right over a subfloor seam. Must've put my whole 200 pounds on it just trying to get it to click in. Kinda felt like the board was daring me to step on it honestly.

Had that happen with a cheap laminate board last year. It looked fine, but snapped right over a joist when I stepped on it. Turns out the core was basically sawdust and glue. Now I always check the cut ends for grain and density before I buy anything.
