PSA: A trick for stubborn core box vents

Last week at our shop in Toledo, we had a big job for a pump housing that kept getting gas holes. The vents in the core box just would not clear. My foreman, who's been doing this since the 80s, told me to heat a length of stiff copper wire with a torch and gently push it through each vent hole before ramming up. Did it on three cores and the difference was night and day, no more scrap. Has anyone else found a good fix for plugged vents on old wooden boxes?

Honestly, that trick sounds smarter than half the "official" fixes I've tried. My usual method involves a lot of swearing and a bent paperclip, so maybe I should upgrade to a torch. Guess we're all just one clogged vent away from becoming amateur plumbers.

So we're just out here unclogging core boxes like they're old plumbing now? Guess the shop torch is pulling double duty for casting and home repair. Next you'll tell me you used a coat hanger and some chewing gum to fix the sprue.

Actually, a coat hanger is a legit tool for clearing a sprue.
