Heard a client say they only hire people with a degree in marketing

I was at a coffee shop in Austin and a guy at the next table was telling his friend he won't even look at freelancers without a formal marketing degree. I've been doing this for 8 years and my degree is in history. I've managed budgets over $50k for clients and gotten real results. That mindset cuts out so many good people who learned by doing the actual work. It made me realize some clients have a checklist that has nothing to do with skill. How do you guys show your experience when someone is stuck on a piece of paper?

Honestly my friend's company hired a marketing grad who couldn't write a basic ad, which totally proves @the_dakota's point. They ended up firing him and hiring someone who learned through real work.

So what happens when their degree-holding hire can't actually do the job?

My best marketing hire had a philosophy degree and doubled our leads.
