In my experience, my BBQ last weekend had everyone on their phones instead of talking. I miss when hangouts meant actual conversation.

Ugh I HATE when that happens! Last month I made a rule for my game night, everyone's phones went in a bowl by the door. It felt weird for like ten minutes, then the actual talking and laughing STARTED. Best decision ever, the vibe was totally different. We all actually remembered the night instead of just our screens.

Used to think that kind of rule was way too strict and would make people upset. Figured everyone should just manage themselves. Tried your bowl idea last week though, and man, it was awkward at first. But you're totally right, after that weird bit it was like a switch flipped. We talked more, the games got funnier, and I actually felt like I connected with people. Changed my whole view, it's worth the weird start.

That's awesome to hear @phoenix235. Makes me wonder what exactly flips the switch. Is it just getting past the first ten minutes of quiet, or is it seeing everyone else commit to being there? Like, when my friend actually looked up from the bowl and made a dumb joke instead of checking a notification, it felt different. The whole room relaxed after that. What was the moment you knew it was working?
