Slate or limestone for a backyard patio, which is more durable?

I hear slate is hard-wearing, but limestone develops a nice patina. Curious what the community thinks.

That "nice patina" on limestone is often just wear and tear from weather. Slate holds its actual shape and surface way better over time, especially with foot traffic. For a patio you actually use, slate is the tougher pick.

Ever see old limestone steps in a garden? They get that worn, wavy look that can actually be pretty slippery. I put in a slate walkway five years ago and the stuff still looks flat and solid, even with my dog running over it every day. Only thing is you gotta reseal slate every couple years to keep its color, but that's way easier than fixing crumbled limestone edges.

My neighbor's limestone patio started flaking after just two winters.
