Update: My quick fix for loose scope rings without buying new ones.

A drop of blue Loctite on the threads holds them secure.

Did my old fix with duct tape and hope do more harm?

Calling it a "duct tape and hope" fix says it all. That stuff leaves a nasty mess and never really holds under recoil. You might have just covered up the real problem and made it harder to fix right.

Have you considered how hard it will be to clean off that Loctite later? Blue Loctite can lock threads so tight you risk stripping the screw heads when you try to remove them. It might not even stay put with strong recoil, letting your scope shift over time. The real issue could be worn rings or a bad base, not just loose screws. Putting thread locker on there is a band-aid fix that hides the actual problem. You could end up damaging your gear and needing new parts anyway.
