Just learned that lackland afb has a 3 year wait for base housing right now

I was looking at the housing office page for San Antonio last night and saw the waitlist for new families is literally 36 months, how do people even plan around that?

36 months sounds like one of those official numbers they throw out to cover themselves. I've seen way too many people post on forums saying they got housing in 8 months when the wait was supposedly 2 years. The system is a joke, you gotta know someone or time it perfectly. Plus base housing isn't even that great, you could probably find a better deal renting off base in a month. People freak out about these waitlists but most of them never even end up on base anyway. It's just typical military bureaucracy making stuff sound worse than it is to cover their own butts.

Alright, I gotta push back a little on that. I get the frustration with wait times, but saying the system is a joke and you have to "know someone" to get in faster is not my experience at all. Most bases I've been on run their housing office pretty by the book with a points based system for priority, not favors. Plus, saying you can get a rental off base in a month sounds optimistic too, especially with how tight the market is near big bases these days. Have you actually tried to get a place off base lately, or is this just what you've heard from other people complaining?
