That guide in Yellowstone told me my $800 tent was overkill for a 3-night trip, and he was right.
He said 'you're paying for features you'll never use on a well-groomed trail' while pointing at my 4-season mountaineering tent, and now I just bring a tarp and save the cash for better food, has anyone else had an expert call them out on over-gearing?

@sarah198 That guide probably caught you with the same Look my buddy got when he brought a cast iron skillet for one night out.

Paying for features you'll never use" hits different when a park ranger says it to your face. I showed up to a weekend car camp with a massive expedition tent and the guy at the permit office just laughed and asked if I was planning to summit Everest on the side. Now I bring a simple silnylon tarp and a bug net, spend the saved money on decent coffee and trail mix instead.
