Shoutout to the dive site where I ended up in a school of jellyfish by accident.
Never trust a current that seems too gentle.

by accident" means you need better buoyancy control, honestly.

That by accident line hits close to home. My entire diving history is just a list of clumsy moments. Once surfaced right next to a surprised sea lion, scared us both half to death. Jellyfish schools might be an upgrade from my usual blunders. At least they glow in the dark.

During a night dive in Monterey, I learned that our clumsy moments can unveil animal behaviors we'd otherwise miss. Jellyfish bioluminescence, for example, often spikes when disturbed, which might explain why schools seem to glow around divers. Your surprised sea lion probably reacted similarly, using that startle response to gauge your intent, making your blunder a brief lesson in interspecies communication.
