I was grabbing lunch at this old diner near the airport last week and sat next to this guy who's been a pipefitter for 35 years. He started talking about Trump's tariffs and how they brought his plant back from the dead in 2018. He said they went from 50 guys to 120 after the steel tariffs kicked in. Just realized my favorite podcast was banned in Australia for a medical claim they made

I was listening to this health podcast for like 2 years. Last week I tried to share an episode with my buddy in Sydney and he couldn't access it. Turns out Australia banned it because one episode talked about using vitamin C for a cold without a disclaimer. The whole thing is still up everywhere else. Has anyone else run into a country blocking content that's totally fine where you live?

Can we talk about AI generated code and who's actually responsible when it breaks?

Last week I had a debate with a buddy who runs a small ecommerce site. He uses AI to write all his backend scripts now, says it saves him 10 hours a week. I pointed out that if that code fails and crashes his inventory system, who's on the hook? Three years ago I watched a guy lose his whole client list when a script he didn't fully understand went rogue and deleted a database. On the flip side, I get that AI can crank out solutions faster than any human. So where do you draw the line between trusting the tool and owning the mess when it goes wrong?

I used to only watch shows that got rave reviews or fit my specific genres perfectly. Action, sci-fi, that's my lane. But last month my sister kept going on about this romantic dramedy set in a small town bakery, and I rolled my eyes every time. Then one Saturday I was stuck at home with a cold and nothing else was on. I figured I'd watch one episode just to prove her wrong. Five episodes later I was texting her at 2 AM about the plot twists. Turns out I was missing out on whole worlds because I thought I knew what I liked. Has anyone else had a show surprise them like that?

That week last summer when my bathroom reno just kept going wrong

I decided to retile my bathroom floor last June and it was supposed to take three days. Day one went fine until I realized the old mortar was way thicker than I expected and my floor height was off. Then on day two I dropped a brand new tile saw blade and it chipped the edge beyond fixing. By day three my wife was asking if we were ever gonna get our shower back. I spent another full day just leveling the subfloor with self-leveling compound and waiting for it to dry. The worst part was the grout drying a weird shade of gray because I mixed a batch wrong. It all worked out in the end but that week cost me an extra $150 and a lot of late nights. Has anyone else had a project snowball like that where you just keep finding new problems?

Hit number 247 on the refugee processing list today, been stuck there for 14 months

I checked my case status online and I'm still at 247. Been at that exact number for over a year now. Thought maybe they lost my file or something so I called the UNHCR office in Nairobi. They said it's normal, that the number can stay the same for months while they review stuff. But 14 months at the same spot? That's not a review, that's being forgotten. Anyone else have their number freeze up like this for that long?

PSA: I was skimming banned book lists wrong for years

I always thought the top 10 banned books lists were just about curse words or sex scenes. Then I looked up the actual ALA data from 2023 and saw 'Gender Queer' and 'The Bluest Eye' got challenged over 50 times each for LGBTQ themes and race stuff. That's when I realized I was missing the whole point about who is trying to silence what. Has anyone else been surprised by what actually gets banned in their state?

PSA: Watch out for weld porosity when you're in a hurry on a fume hood

I was working on a fume hood duct up at Purdue's chemistry building last Tuesday. Had to get done before the lab opened at 8 AM so I rushed the root pass on a stainless joint. About halfway through I noticed this pinhole starting to form and figured I could just grind it out later. Well later never came and the QC guy flagged it on the radiograph that afternoon. Cost me 3 hours on Saturday to come back and cut it out then reweld it proper. Has anyone else had a rushed job come back to bite them like this?

Last Tuesday was the worst dive day I've had in my 7 years

Got called out to fix a grate on a water intake pipe near the port, visibility was maybe 2 feet and the current kept slamming me into the structure. Spent 4 hours down there with a lift bag trying to get a 300 pound piece of metal unjammed, and it kept shifting every time I got close. Has anyone else dealt with horrible current on a job and found a trick to stay stable without fighting it the whole time?

Honestly, it depends on what you're testing. Signal levels can look fine on paper but if you half-crimped a connector it'll fail in a month anyway. My husband used to run drops for a cable company and he swore by giving each connection a solid tug before moving on, saved him a ton of callbacks.

Right? "Snow removal clause" sounds innocent until you realize they buried a whole "you owe us your firstborn if we have to shovel" in the fine print. I swear, landlords write those things like they're hoping for a blizzard every week just to cash in. It's always something about "reasonable time" which somehow means 4 AM on a Saturday.

That "had to call a structural engineer" part really hit home for me.
