Burned my hand at a cookout and now I double check everything

Last weekend at my cousin's place in Toledo, I grabbed the basket handle right after a batch of fries without checking if it had cooled. That thing was way hotter than I expected, and I've got a nice red mark to show for it. I always assumed the plastic handle was enough, but it only covers part of the metal. Now I keep a pair of silicone mitts right next to the air fryer and I won't touch anything until it's sat for at least 5 minutes. Has anyone else had a close call with the handle or the tray edges?

Burned myself on the basket edge of a toaster oven once, and it took forever to heal because it was right between my thumb and index finger. Every time I reached for a utensil or washed dishes, I'd bump it and start the whole stinging process over again. It's wild how we assume handles are safe just because they look like they should be, but the metal underneath is playing a whole different game. Good on you for grabbing the silicone mitts, that's exactly what I ended up doing too. The five minute rule is solid, even if it makes me impatient every single time. Hope the mark fades fast, those fry burns are no joke.
