Honestly, I used to think the whole 'midnight sun' thing was just a tourist gimmick until I tried to sleep through it in Fairbanks last June

Tried to tough it out with just a sleep mask in Iceland. Woke up at 3 AM convinced I was late for something because the room was so bright. My brain could not accept it was nighttime. Ended up taping trash bags over the windows, looked like a serial killer's apartment. Learned the hard way that blackout curtains are a real need, not a luxury.

Been there with the trash bag look. I used binder clips and a dark towel when my hotel had those thin curtains. Worked better than expected but still let some light in around the edges. Brooke71 is right about it being a game changer, I finally bought a portable blackout blind that rolls up. Total difference for summer mornings or any place with street lights.

Serial killer's apartment" is so real! I used to think blackout curtains were just for fancy hotels, but that 3 AM panic is no joke. Total game changer for summer trips now.
