I picked the ferry over flying to Juneau and I would do it again
Last June I had to get from Bellingham to Juneau and the plane ticket was $480 round trip while the ferry was $310 with a cabin. I took the ferry, and the extra 3 days of travel turned into the best part of the whole trip. We passed through the inside passage and I saw humpbacks off the bow near Ketchikan around 6am on the second morning. The drive up is not for everyone if you get seasick, but if you have the time the ferry beats the airport every single time. Has anyone done the cross gulf route from Whittier instead? I want to try that one next summer.
How long was the crossing when you went through the inside passage, and did you book the cabin way ahead or grab it last minute? I keep hearing the cross gulf route from Whittier is a whole different animal because you get way more open water and the swells can get rough. A buddy of mine did it and said the first day out of Whittier was really choppy, but then it calmed down and the glacier views near College Fjord made up for it. Did you get seasick at all on your trip, or did the inside passage stay pretty smooth the whole way? I want to try that Whittier run too but I am nervous about the motion sickness part.
