The old guy at the Fairbanks gas station said the road north used to close in September, not October
I used to figure the season up here ran on some fixed schedule, but he talked about hauling supplies to Deadhorse back in the 80s when the snow came early and stayed. Now the snowmachine trails near town are mud by mid April, and my neighbor is still running his in mid May. Anyone else notice the seasons sliding around?
Snowmachine season is a weird one to use for this, though. That's on trails and swamps, not the actual road, so mud in April does not really tell you much about when the haul road shuts down. The Deadhorse run closing in September vs October is a totally different deal. Your neighbor riding in May might just mean he's going where the snow packs better.
