Tried gold panning at Resurrection Creek near Hope and found way more than I expected
I drove down from Anchorage back in June with a $40 panning kit from a sporting goods store and figured I'd find a few little flakes at best. After about three hours of squatting in cold water at Resurrection Creek near Hope, I had maybe a quarter gram of fine gold, which is basically nothing money wise. What surprised me was how many other people were out there doing the exact same thing, whole families with kids, retirees, everyone just swishing gravel around. The real lesson was that the gold is a tiny part of it, the day outside was the point. Anyone else get into panning this summer, and did you bother with a sluice or just stick to the pan?
Sounds like a fun day out but let's be real, a quarter gram isn't paying for the gas to get there. People act like panning is some big gold rush but you're basically just standing in cold water for pennies. Still beats a day at the office though.
