Twenty years of ice fishing and I never knew you lube the auger

Went out with my neighbor on Harding Lake last Saturday, first time in a while. My old hand auger took forever to get through maybe 18 inches, I was huffing and puffing. He hands me a spray can of silicone lube and says, you got to hit the blades every few turns. I had no clue, I figured the cold just made it hard. Felt like a complete moron standing there with my bucket and tip-ups. Anyone else learn a basic trick way later than they should have?

Silicone on the blades every few turns" is the part that's off, you really only need it once or twice.
