Unpopular opinion: landlord special repairs aren't always the worst thing
My neighbor told me last summer I should just patch a small hole in my drywall with spackle and paint, no mesh tape needed. I thought he was crazy but tried it anyway. That was 8 months ago and the patch is still perfect with zero cracks. Now my cousin had the opposite happen - she listened to someone who said skip the primer on a repaint and the whole ceiling peeled in 3 months. So who do you trust when every homeowner gives conflicting advice? Has anyone else had a quick fix actually work out long term or did you get burned?

My dad always said there's two kinds of people in the world - the ones who take shortcuts that work and the ones who take shortcuts that bite them later. I've noticed this with almost everything, not just houses. Like with cooking, some people say you can skip the salt in pasta water and it's fine, but others swear by it and get perfect pasta every time. Or with car maintenance, some mechanics say you can delay an oil change by 500 miles no problem while others act like you'll blow your engine up the second you hit 3,000. The real trick seems to be knowing which corners you can cut and which ones are built into the structure itself. Landlord specials or just regular life, it all comes down to that same gamble.

Yeah that "knowing which corners you can cut" thing is huge. @harperwright I learned that the hard way with a blown head gasket from pushing an oil change too far. Now I pick my battles. Salt in pasta water always. Skip the fancy cheese? Yeah that's fine. You live and learn what actually matters.
