Appreciation post: a guy at my local shop in Pittsburgh changed my mind about dubs
I was a sub purist for years, like 12 years of refusing to even try dubs. Then a dude named Marcus at my local anime meetup in Pittsburgh told me to give the English cast of Frieren a real shot for 3 episodes before judging it. I did it last week and honestly the voice work was solid, especially the quieter scenes where the sub text felt flat to me. I went back and watched 6 more episodes dubbed and I think I was just being stubborn for no reason. Now I keep wondering what else I wrote off without giving it a fair try. Has anyone else been won over by a specific dub after years of avoiding them, and which show did it?
The "I was just being stubborn for no reason" line hit me hard because that is 100% me for like a decade. I finally caved on Cowboy Bebop after swearing the sub was sacred, and the dub cast had this laid back feel that actually fit the jazz vibe better than I expected. Still catch myself dodging dubs out of habit though, so I get the whole "what else did I write off" feeling.
