I finally tried that anime my friend wouldn't shut up about for 6 months

After ignoring Made in Abyss because the cute art style felt like a trap, I binged the whole first season in one night last weekend and now I'm mad at myself for waiting so long - has anyone else been burned by judging an anime by its cover?

Honestly I kinda get where the friend was coming from lol. Made in Abyss is one of those shows where the cute stuff hides some pretty dark twists. But I actually liked the contrast, made the heavy moments hit way harder.

Keep watching to the end, didn't you feel like the cute art style almost made the grim parts worse by catching you off guard? In my experience, when a show leans that hard into an innocent look, the shock value only works if you actually buy into the sweetness first. Your mileage may vary of course, but I think a lot of that tension comes from knowing things are gonna get dark but not knowing exactly when.
