The debate over dub vs sub is getting louder in my local anime club
I went to a meetup last week at a coffee shop in Brooklyn, and things got heated when someone said dubs are ruining the experience. Three years ago, I was all in on subs, thought dubs were garbage. But last month, I watched Cowboy Bebop dubbed for the first time and actually liked it more. Now I'm stuck in the middle, seeing both sides. Some people argue dubs lose the original emotion and voice acting, while others say subs make you miss the animation because you're reading. My question is, does the quality of the dub matter more than sticking to the original language? Has anyone else flip-flopped on this over time?

Oh man, you really stepped into the war zone with that question, didn't you? I swear anime fans act like picking subs over dubs is a personality trait sometimes. I did the same flip flop though, started with subs, got all snobby about it, then watched Fullmetal Alchemist dubbed and realized I was just being a hipster. The quality of the dub matters a ton, like bad dubbing can ruin a show, but a good one can make it better because you're not squinting at words the whole time. I guess we just need to admit there's room for both without starting a fight in a coffee shop.

It's funny how that sub vs. dub argument is just one of those things people dig their heels in over, like how some folks swear by vinyl records even when streaming sounds just as good... It's all about what you grew up with and what feels right in the moment, really. At the end of the day, we just want to enjoy the story without getting hung up on how we're taking it in.
