The throwaway line about filler arcs that finally got me to skip them

I was waiting for my laundry at a 24 hour laundromat in Austin last Tuesday and this guy next to me told his friend that filler arcs are just 'practice for the manga reader patience.' I mean, I always watched every episode of everything, even the beach episodes that go nowhere. But hearing it framed like that made me think about how I treat side quests in games too, I never skip them either. So I tried skipping the filler in One Piece for the first time and honestly the pacing felt way better, but now I worry I'm missing some inside jokes. Has anyone else made the jump and actually gone back to watch the filler later, or do you just commit to the cut?

Skipping filler means you're missing the whole point of manga pacing.
