Watched Naruto in Japanese vs English dub and it was like two different shows

I saw a before and after difference when I rewatched the Chunin Exams arc in Japanese after seeing it dubbed for years. The pacing felt faster and characters like Orochimaru had way more menace, you know? Just wondering if anyone else noticed how much the voice direction changes the whole vibe.

Watched the Pain fight in English first then Japanese and honestly it felt like two completely different characters. The Japanese voice actor made Pain sound tired and broken instead of just dramatic and angry, which totally changed how I saw his motives. Little stuff like that makes rewatching worth it even when you already know the plot (the sub versions of sad scenes hit way harder too).

I get what you're saying about the Japanese voice making Pain sound tired and broken, but I see it differently. The English dub actually makes him feel more relatable to me because his anger seems justified when you know what he's been through. Pain's whole deal is that he's lashing out at a world that hurt him, and the English voice captures that rage and pain in a way that feels immediate. The Japanese version sounds more like he's given up, which takes away some of that drive and makes him less threatening. I think both are valid, but the English version connects with me more because it shows a guy who's still fighting, not just accepting his fate.
