Question about the Viking runestone I saw in Minnesota last month
I had to decide between buying a replica runestone or donating to the museum that houses the Kensington Runestone. I went with the donation since the curator told me they rely on small gifts to keep the lights on. Has anyone else wrestled with what to do when you visit a small site like that?

Did you feel like you got a better experience by donating? I used to just grab the cheap souvenir and call it a day, but after talking to a museum guy once I realized those small donations actually keep the place running. Now I always toss in what I can instead of buying junk.

Oh man, that museum guy really put it into perspective, didn't he? I had a similar chat with a zookeeper once (total random encounter, he was just feeding the seals) and it changed my whole approach too. That junk in the gift shop is mostly made overseas and overpriced anyway, so tossing even a few bucks in the donation box feels way more meaningful. Plus, you get that little warm feeling knowing your money is going straight to keeping the lights on and the exhibits running. It's like a secret handshake with the place, you know? I always skip the souvenir now and just drop what I can in the box on my way out.
