Shoutout to the volunteer who spotted the Roman coin in the rain at the York dig yesterday, saving my soggy afternoon
I was about to pack up when a student flagged a tiny silver denarius in the mud, which totally turned around a day where my main trench had just collapsed into a water-filled mess.

That York find is wild, a whole denarius just sitting there. I read an article last week about how many Roman coins are still found in Britain every year, something like 50,000. It's not just about the metal, @morgancarter, it's the history that didn't wash away. That student literally pulled a piece of someone's salary from like 1800 years ago out of the mud. Makes a wet dollar in a vending machine seem pretty boring.

What's so great about a soggy coin anyway?

Honestly felt that, soggy coins are the worst. Pulling one out of a pocket after rain just feels nasty and wrong. They never work in vending machines either, total waste of a dollar. Just a sad, damp little piece of metal.
