Got scammed by a 'no money down' contractor at a job site in Austin

I was running a crew on a house flip in Austin last spring and the GC brought in this guy to do drywall finishing. He had no truck wrap, no website, just a card with a phone number and a promise of no money down. Seemed legit enough (I guess) until he took a $300 deposit for materials and just vanished after two days. The homeowner ended up calling me to fix his half-done mud work that was already cracking. Turns out he'd been bouncing between job sites in the same neighborhood and nobody checked his license. Now I always run a quick background check on any subcontractor who can't show me at least three referrals from local suppliers. Has anyone else had a sub just bail mid-job like that?

Wait, he took a $300 deposit and still bailed after only two days? That's crazy, I'd be livid.

$300 and two days is just insult to injury honestly.
