Hot take: I thought $300 speakers couldn't be beat until a repair tech in Reno popped one open on my lunch break
I always figured pricey speakers were just a scam for people with more money than sense, so I stuck with my $300 set for years and felt pretty smart about it. Then my left one started crackling, and a repair guy named Dave in Reno (found him off a local board, shop was behind a taco place) let me watch him pull the back panel off. The crossover inside was basically three capacitors and a coil glued to cardboard, and he said the whole board costs the maker maybe four bucks. He showed me a $900 pair he had on the bench that used a real circuit board, better caps, and a braced cabinet, and the difference in how the drivers were mounted was not even close. I asked why nobody talks about this, and he laughed and said most folks never hear the same track side by side. I did that the next weekend at a shop in town, and yeah, the cheap pair sounded muddy once I knew what to listen for. So what actually changed my mind wasnt specs or reviews, it was seeing the guts and hearing the A/B in the same room. Anyone else here ever crack open a piece of gear and have it totally wreck your opinion of it?
