Learned a weird fix for forgetting names at a party in Tulsa

I used to forget names about 5 seconds after hearing them, so at a backyard BBQ in Tulsa I tried repeating the name out loud right away in a sentence ("good to meet you, Marcus"). It felt awkward at first but I remembered 9 out of 10 names that night, which never happens for me. Does anyone else have a trick that actually sticks, or is this just a fluke?
