I paid $80 for a year of 'FinFlow Pro' thinking it would automate everything, but it was way too complicated and I went back to my old spreadsheet in two weeks. Has anyone else wasted cash on a tool that just made things harder?

I was at the Pima Air & Space Museum yesterday and saw a perfectly preserved radial engine with the maintenance logs still attached.

It's a small thing, but seeing that detailed, handwritten logbook from the 1950s next to the engine it tracked really hit home about the history of our trade, and has anyone else found an old piece of documentation that gave you a new respect for the work?

Can we talk about dimensioning to the center of a wall?

I keep seeing prints from other shops where they dimension to the face of a stud. Did a remodel in Tampa last month and the framers were off by a full inch on every interior wall. It matters because everything from cabinets to plumbing stacks gets thrown off. I was taught to always dimension to the centerline, that way the framing crew can adjust for plate thickness. My old boss called it 'the only way that doesn't create a domino effect of errors'. Anyone else run into this on commercial jobs, or is it just a residential thing?

Spent 8 hours chasing a phantom oil leak on a 6.7 Powerstroke

The customer said it was dripping from the rear main, so I pulled the trans in my shop in Boise. Turned out to be a tiny crack in the oil cooler housing up top, dripping down the back of the block. The whole job should have been a 2 hour fix, not a full day. Anyone else had a leak that sent you on a wild goose chase?

My uncle told me to skip the John Muir Trail permit and try a different route

He said the High Sierra Trail out of Sequoia was just as good and easier to get a spot for (which was right). I did it last August and only saw a handful of other groups the whole week. The views from Precipice Lake were insane, and I didn't have to deal with the JMT lottery. Has anyone else found a great alternative to a super popular trail?

I bought a $300 signal booster kit for a tough install and it was a total bust

Had a client in a brick building with terrible wireless sensor range, so I ordered a fancy repeater kit thinking it would solve everything. After two full days of messing with placement and settings, the signal was still dropping and I had to eat the cost and run new wire anyway. Has anyone found a reliable wireless solution for thick masonry, or is it always better to just plan for a wired run from the start?

I thought the push for heat pumps was just hype until my neighbor in Portland showed me his winter bill

He got a heat pump installed last October and his heating costs dropped by almost half compared to his old gas furnace. I was sure they wouldn't work well in our cold, damp winters, but he had data from the whole season. Seeing his actual numbers from November to March changed my mind completely. What other climate tech have people been surprised actually works?

Yeah, digging into local archives was the only thing that got me anywhere too, @nathan545. I hit a total dead end with the big genealogy sites for this one branch of my family. Spent weeks getting nowhere. Then I found a digitized small-town paper from where they lived and just started reading every issue from around when they were there. Found a tiny mention of my great-great-uncle's store opening in the business notes section. That one little clue opened up everything. It's a grind but it works.
