Just found out only 1 in 5 autistic adults in the US has a job, and I sat with that for a while
Saw that number in a 2023 report from the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute and it hit way harder than I expected. For anyone here who's job hunting or working right now, what actually helped you get your foot in the door?
Man that number is rough but it matches what I see. What worked for me was temp agencies, honestly. They don't care about your social skills as much, they just need warm bodies who show up on time, and a lot of those gigs turn into real jobs if you stick with it. I also had someone at a local autism group help me rewrite my resume so it focused on what I can actually do instead of all the gaps. The interview part is still the worst for me but practicing the same answers over and over until they're automatic helped a ton. Applying to big companies with set rules beat small places where it's all about vibes. It took me like two years of trying but I got there, so don't give up.
