Overheard a mom at the playground say her son 'just needs more discipline'

Yesterday at the oak street playground, I was pushing my nephew on the swings and this mom was talking to her friend about her 8 year old who has autism. She said, "He just needs more discipline, he throws these huge fits when things are out of order." I wanted to say something but I didn't know how to jump in. It got me thinking about how often people confuse sensory overload or routine needs with behavior problems. Has anyone else run into this misunderstanding, and how do you handle it without starting a fight?
