Warning: check your brake fluid color before you trust that 'recent service' sticker
Bought a used Civic off a guy in Reno two months ago and the sticker said the brakes were done at 60k. Pulled the master cylinder cap yesterday and the fluid looked like iced tea, not the clear stuff it should be. Ten minutes and a $6 turkey baster later I had fresh fluid in there. Has anyone else caught a shop skipping the fluid flush on a 'full brake job'?
My brother ran a shop in Sparks for 15 years and told me the fluid flush is the first thing they cut when a customer just wants the cheapest quote. The pads and rotors are visible so those get done, but the fluid is out of sight so nobody checks until the pedal feels mushy or the calipers seize up. Your $6 baster trick saved you a $400 master cylinder down the road, that iced tea color means it was never touched at 60k.
