The wiring loom tape trick I saw at a salvage yard in Phoenix

Stopped by a Pick-N-Pull last Tuesday and watched a guy use plain electrical tape to wrap a harness, then hit it with a heat gun so it shrunk tight. He said it beats buying 3M tape at $12 a roll for a quick fix. Has anyone else tried that on daily drivers or is it just asking for melted mess?

I always figured heat shrink tape was just for marine work or people with more money than sense, but I tried this on an old truck of mine last month and it honestly held up better than I expected. The key is not to go crazy with the heat gun, just enough to get it snug without cooking the wires underneath. I’d still use the real tape on anything exposed to oil or constant rubbing, but for a clean splice or a spot that’s out of the way, this is a solid trick. Saved me a trip to the parts store and probably twenty bucks over what I would have spent. It’s not the prettiest fix but it’s honest work, and I’m a fan of anything that keeps a daily driver rolling without a fuss.
