A ramp guy at DFW asked why I crimp every pin twice and now I'm questioning my whole method
Was doing a connector swap on a CRJ last Tuesday and this ramper named Marcus stopped to watch me work. He said his dad was a sparky for 30 years and always told him "one squeeze is a guess, two is a promise." I've been crimping once and tug testing for 6 years without a single bad pin but now I can't stop thinking about it. Anybody here actually crimp twice or is that just gonna mash the barrel?
That "one squeeze is a guess" line is catchy but it does not match how crimpers actually work. The tool is built to bottom out at the right pressure, so a second squeeze on a proper ratcheting crimper does nothing except maybe crack the barrel or nick the wire. I've done thousands of pins with one full squeeze and a solid tug test, and the only failures I ever found traced back to the wrong die or stripped wire, not the count.
