Fired our biggest client 8 months ago. Best call I ever made.
Eight months ago I walked away from a client that made up 41% of our revenue. They called me every Sunday night, renegotiated the rate twice, and their ops guy once told me we were "lucky to have the work." I did the math on a Tuesday and realized they were costing us money after support hours. My cofounder thought I lost my mind. Two quarters later our margins are up 12 points and we finally had room to sign three smaller clients who actually say thank you. We are not in a better spot by accident, we got there by firing the wrong people. Anyone else here cut a whale and lived to tell about it?
Read a thing on Reddit a while back from a guy who did the same thing and he said the scary part wasn't losing the money, it was the quiet. No more Sunday night calls, no more drama, and his brain kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. Took him months to stop feeling like he was about to get in trouble. Sounds like you got past that part fast, which is honestly the hard part. Cutting a whale is like ripping off a bandaid that was also slowly draining your bank account. Good on you for doing the math instead of just riding it out.
