Why does nobody talk about firing your biggest client?
Everyone in this space says grow your biggest accounts, but I dropped our top client 6 months ago and revenue actually went up 18% by month 3. They were 40% of our income and demanded custom work every week, which killed our team's time for smaller deals. That Tuesday I sent the email, I felt sick, then within 2 weeks we closed 3 smaller clients who each pay $2k a month and never ask for extras. My cofounder still thinks I got lucky, but our margins are double what they were. Has anyone else cut a big account and seen the same thing, or did I just get lucky with timing?
Dropped a gym membership once that I swore was keeping me in shape, turns out I just started running outside and saved $60 a month. Cutting stuff that drains you can open up room for better things, even when it feels scary at the time. Sounds like your team finally got their heads above water and that's worth more than one whale client any day.
