Pacific Crest Trail vs Colorado Trail: Which was harder for a first timer?

I had to choose between the PCT and the Colorado Trail for my first long hike last summer. Picked the Colorado Trail because it's shorter at 500 miles and figured I could handle the altitude. Turns out the elevation kicked my butt way more than I expected - I was sucking wind at 12k feet for 3 days straight. But the logistics were way easier since you can resupply in small towns every 4-5 days. My buddy did the PCT and said the desert water carries were brutal but the trail was more gradual. What's your take - would you rather deal with altitude or water weight for a first big trip?

Wow, I used to think altitude was overblown but this changed my mind. I was set on the PCT being the "real" first timer trail, but your point about Colorado Trail logistics actually sounds way more manageable for someone new. I'd take water weight over gasping for air any day.

Yeah I used to think altitude was just something people complained about for no reason. Then I did a section of the Colorado Trail near Leadville and spent a whole day with a splitting headache and could barely sleep. I'd take carrying extra water over that any day. At least with water weight you can plan around it and know when the next source is coming. With altitude you just have to suck it up and hope your body adjusts before your trip is over.
