Unpopular opinion: Strict backpacking routes ruin the real experience

Everyone seems obsessed with sticking to marked trails and guidebooks. I believe this takes away from the spirit of backpacking. Last summer in Montana, I ignored the main path and followed a creek instead. I camped by a quiet pond that wasn't on any map. Friends who stayed on the official route dealt with noise and trash. Getting lost on purpose led to my best memories. Do you ever ditch the plan and explore freely?

Getting lost on purpose... my friend tried that in Colorado and stumbled on a hidden waterfall. She said it wasn't on any trail map and made the whole trip worth it.

My cousin did something similar in the Smokies, just wandered off a main path following a creek sound. He found this old, crumbling homestead foundation completely covered in moss, with wildflowers growing through the stone. Said it felt like stepping back in time, way more special than any crowded lookout point. Those unplanned finds really do stick with you.

Off-trail adventures create MAGIC, like @umabailey's friend's waterfall find.
