Wrote off the JMT for a decade because everyone hyped it, then a ranger at Tuolumne set me straight
Kept seeing the John Muir Trail pop up in every single hiking thread, so I brushed it off as overrated for about 10 years. Last August a ranger at the Tuolumne Meadows desk pulled out a map, circled the 3 or 4 stretches most folks rush past, and talked me into a 6 day section hike instead of the full 211 miles. She was right, the crowds thin out fast past Donohue Pass and the stretch near Thousand Island Lake was the best 2 days of hiking I've done. Anyone else find that a shorter chunk of a famous route beats grinding the whole thing?
Sounds like you found the cheat code: let the ranger do your trip planning and skip the part where you hate every step because 300 people are breathing down your neck. Six days of the good stuff beats 211 miles of suffering just so you can say you did it.
