Caught a broken physics gag in that asteroid movie at the Alamo in Austin and my buddy almost got us kicked out
So last Friday we hit the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar for the 9:40 showing of that new asteroid flick, and about an hour in there's a scene where the crew walks on the rock like it's a parking lot, no tether, no bounce, nothing. I leaned over and whispered that the gravity would be like 0.0003 g, so one push off and they'd drift for 20 minutes, and my buddy Jake laughed so loud a guy two rows up turned around and shushed us. I tried to explain it quieter, that even a tiny asteroid has escape velocity around a few meters per second, so you wouldn't walk, you'd basically float off into space, and Jake just kept going. The manager came by with one of those little cards, you know the ones they slide on the table, and I thought we were done for. Turns out he just wanted to know if the physics thing was true, and we ended up talking for like 10 minutes in the hallway about how the sound in the explosions makes zero sense too. He comped our popcorn and said his brother teaches physics at UT. Honestly way more fun than the movie. Does anyone else have a theater story where the bad science almost got you in trouble?
That manager turning out to be cool is the best plot twist of the whole night, way better than anything in the actual movie. Bad space physics ruining a flick is one thing but getting free popcorn and a 10 minute hallway debate out of it is a total win.
South Lamar's had my back before too, the trick is to keep the whispers low and pick a row near the back. If a manager walks up with a card, just own it and ask what they thought of the scene, that hallway chat is usually free popcorn waiting to happen.
