My neighbor said my buttercream was way too sweet and she was right

I used to follow my grandmother's recipe with 4 cups of powdered sugar per stick of butter. Last week my neighbor Jan across the street tried my cupcakes and said the frosting was cloying. I cut it down to 2 and a half cups and added a pinch of salt and it actually tastes like butter now. Has anyone else had to adjust a family recipe after honest feedback?

oh man, that's exactly what happened with my mom's chocolate chip cookies. she always used a full bag of sugar and i finally cut it back by a third and added flaky salt on top and now people actually ask for the recipe. sometimes older recipes are just from a time when people wanted everything crazy sweet.

the flaky salt move is a game changer for sure @phoenix_campbell88. i think a lot of those old recipes were made when people had smaller kitchens and less access to specialty stuff so they just dumped in sugar to make things taste good. cutting it back and adding salt lets the actual cookie flavor come through.
