Changed my mind on the ban of "problematic" after a 4th grader got suspended for saying "oof"
I used to think zero tolerance word bans were fine, just schools keeping things calm. Then my nephew in Reno got a 3 day suspension for saying "oof" when he dropped his lunch tray, and the principal said it was "disrespectful language." I went to the meeting with him and asked what rule "oof" broke, and she couldn't point to one. Now I think most of these bans are just adults guessing at vibes. Has anyone else seen a school ban a word that isn't even a slur or a threat?
What did the principal even write on the slip, "made a noise we didn't like"? When my kid got dinged for something dumb like that, I asked for the student handbook and made them show me the exact line. Turns out there wasn't one, so I asked for it in writing that no rule was broken, and the suspension got dropped the same day. Make them put their reason on paper every single time, because half these calls fall apart once an adult has to type it out. Also tell your sister to keep every email and note in one folder, since a paper trail is the only thing that makes a school back down.
