Hot take: I was all for my kid's school banning "retard" as an insult, until I saw the word list they actually sent home
Last month our district in Mesa sent home a 14 page list of banned words and I signed off on it without reading it close. Then my 9 year old got written up for saying "dumb" on the playground, and a kid in her class got a warning for calling a math problem "lame." I went to the principal and compared the list to the actual bullying reports from last year, and 11 of the 12 real incidents involved slurs about race or weight, not "dumb" or "lame." So now I think a short list of slurs, like 6 or 7 words, does way more than a giant list that treats every mean word the same. Has any other parent had a school hand them a banned word list that was this long, and did anyone push back?
Ugh, yes, we went through the same thing two years ago. What worked for us was getting a few other parents together and asking the principal to show us the actual incident reports from the year before. Once they saw that almost none of the write ups were about words like "dumb" or "lame," they cut the list way down to the real slurs. Might be worth rounding up a couple other annoyed parents and doing the same.
