Finally stopped ignoring my bank's mobile deposit limits after getting hit with a 7 day hold
I used to just deposit checks through the app without ever checking the daily limit (which was $2,000 at my credit union). Last month I deposited a $3,500 check from a side job and the app took it but then my account was flagged. The hold ended up being 7 business days and I couldn't pay my rent on time. I found out the hard way that going over the limit triggers an automatic review even if the check is legit. Anyone else dealt with surprise holds from mobile deposit caps?

That "automatic review" thing is exactly what I see everywhere now. Banks, insurance, even the grocery store loyalty cards are all running on automated systems that flag you first and ask questions later.

Got hit with something similar but it was because I deposited the check at an ATM instead of the app once. My bank has a $1,500 mobile limit so I figured using the ATM would bypass that. Nope. They slapped a 10 day hold on a $2,800 check and flagged my whole account for "unusual activity." Took three calls and a visit to the branch to get it sorted. The worst part was the teller admitted the ATM deposits get checked manually anyway so the hold was automatic. Now I just split big checks across multiple days or drive to the actual bank teller. It's a pain but cheaper than late fees.
