Friend told me I was paranoid for VPN usage - then I saw my ISP logs

I have a buddy who works in IT and he kept telling me I was being dramatic about using a VPN for everything. Said it was overkill and made me look like I was hiding something. Well last week I got curious and called my ISP to ask about my data usage for some billing issue. They casually mentioned they could see every website I visited even without the VPN. That freaked me out because I live in Texas and we don't have great privacy laws here. Now I'm wondering what else they track and if my buddy was just wrong. Has anyone else had an ISP tell you stuff like this or am I overreacting?

Nah, they just tell you that to scare you into buying their VPN service.

Honestly I used to think the same way but after seeing how much data gets scooped up just from normal browsing it kinda changed my mind. Like yeah some companies are just trying to sell you stuff but the tracking is real lol.
