Update: That VPN advice from a rando on r/privacy almost got me fined in Dubai

Ngl, I was in Dubai for a 3 week work trip in March and some guy in a Telegram group told me to use a free VPN for streaming. I ignored him and paid for a solid one, good thing too. A coworker used his free one and got a 500k AED fine threat from the telecom regulator. Has anyone else dealt with VPN crackdowns in the UAE or Qatar? How do you stay safe without breaking their laws?
